An Imaging
Scientist is...

Exploring the absolute importance of imaging scientists
for discoveries in today’s biosciences

This project is all about understanding, recognising and celebrating Imaging Scientists -- the incredible people behind the science of bioimaging.

We explore who ‘imaging scientists’ are, their contribution to science and the opportunities and challenges they face day-to-day in using imaging to answer scientific questions.

A production of the BioImagingUK Network, funded by BBSRC, MRC, Wellcome Trust, and EPSRC.

This project is all about understanding, recognising and celebrating Imaging Scientists -- the incredible people behind the science of imaging.

We explore who Imaging Scientists are, their contribution to science and the opportunities and challenges they face day-to-day in using imaging to answer scientific questions.

When we started this project, we realised that we didn’t have a good way to refer to staff members who specialise in building and running imaging systems, training students and other scientists, and analysing imaging data.

So, we’ve used the term ‘Imaging Scientist’ to include all the different types of people and roles that contribute to world-class imaging and support cutting-edge science.

An Imaging Scientist makes a new super-advanced imaging technology work to the absolute limit of its potential.  An Imaging Scientist makes discoveries with imaging possible.

About image2

To get a deeper understanding of who Imaging Scientists are and what they do, we have Interviewed several who at various stages in their careers, in many different types of research institutions, across the UK.

Many see their role as facilitators, enablers and collaborators, some as technologists but all have a passion for and are experts in imaging.

As this project developed, we realised that Imaging Scientists weren’t only critical in biology and biomedicine-- exactly the same requirements happened in the materials sciences, physics and even industrial manufacturing. It’s a lot to cover, we’ve tried to capture this diversity in our interviews.

Listening to all of our interviews, you get a strong feeling that now more than ever, imaging scientists are so essential for the future of scientific discovery. It’s an incredibly powerful, productive, and precious resource that we -- the UK scientific community -- have built. This project celebrates Imaging Scientists and asks, “How do we maintain and grow the Imaging Scientists that are the foundation of much of our scientific success?”
